Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother as well as her godparents. Her father left her family. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder based on the word association when she was a teenager. Ford was intrigued by the profession of acting in her teen years, and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she would not be a good choice for this school. Ford then applied for a place in the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate made her television debut in 1991, appearing on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. Also, she was a regular performer in the theatre, eventually joining with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. But Tate was soon gaining notice for her stand-up comedy that she incorporated into her repertoire in 1996.
